Since many medications may not be taken during pregnancy, expectant mothers resort to natural methods to fight colds. These often include cranberry, which has numerous health-promoting properties. But is it safe during pregnancy? What ailments does the cranberry help with?

Cranberries during pregnancy – properties

Cranberries are known for their health-promoting properties. They contain many valuable ingredients such as vitamins C and E, iron and fiber. The cranberry fruit also contains magnesium, potassium and phosphorus. Of great importance is also the presence of antioxidants, whose task is to block free radicals that are involved in the development of inflammation. The presence of fiber, on the other hand, promotes the proper functioning of the digestive tract and reduces discomforts such as constipation that can occur during pregnancy. Thanks to cranberries and their high vitamin C content, iron is better absorbed, which is especially important for pregnant women who struggle with anemia.

Cranberries also contain compounds that prevent bacteria from attaching to the walls of the urethra and developing the unpleasant symptoms of inflammation. Therefore, cranberries are recommended for the prevention of recurrent urinary tract and bladder infections.

Cranberries in pregnancy – is it safe?

Cranberries are safe for pregnant women and the developing baby in all trimesters of pregnancy. Eating cranberry fruit or drinking the juice has not been shown to have a negative effect on the course of pregnancy or the risk of premature birth. However, this does not mean that cranberries can replace drug treatment. Bacteria in the urine, even if they do not show symptoms, require antibiotic therapy.

Cranberries in pregnancy – indications

Due to their properties, cranberries are particularly recommended in home remedies for cold and infection symptoms, as well as symptoms of urinary tract infections or recurrent infections. During pregnancy, cranberries can also be consumed by expectant mothers taking iron supplements to facilitate the absorption of iron. It is also a good idea to use it in case of constipation or gum disease.

Of course, home remedies cannot replace a visit to the doctor. Cranberries are often recommended only as a supportive or preventive measure. Inflammation of the urinary tract during pregnancy must be treated with an antibiotic.

Cranberries in pregnancy – juice or tablets?

Nowadays, the properties of natural cranberries can be found not only in their fruits, but also in pharmaceutical preparations – tablets or syrup. Cranberry juices are also gaining popularity and can be added to tea or water. However, watch out for the sugar or glucose-fructose syrup content in these products. It is best to use natural, unprocessed preparations with no added sugar or preservatives as much as possible.
