It can also occur during pregnancy. The cause lies in hormonal changes in the pregnant woman\u2019s body. But how should it be treated\u2014and is it true that acne could be a sign of having a girl?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Causes of acne during pregnancy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">During pregnancy, levels of progesterone and androgens in a woman\u2019s body rise. This stimulates the sebaceous glands and increases sebum production. If the gland ducts become clogged, bacteria can multiply\u2014leading to the development of acne. It typically appears on the face and back and is most common during the first trimester of pregnancy. Greasy hair is also frequently associated with this condition. In the second and third trimesters, many women notice a significant improvement in their skin, which may be due to the effects of estrogen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Stress and an unbalanced diet can also negatively impact skin health. Chocolate and spicy foods should be avoided to reduce the risk of unwanted skin blemishes\u2014though specific cravings are common during pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, acne can persist even after birth and may continue during breastfeeding. This is linked to increased levels of the hormone prolactin, which not only regulates milk production but also supports the growth of breast tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>How to treat acne during pregnancy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Treating acne during pregnancy is challenging, as many medications are not suitable for pregnant women. Acne treatments based on vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) are teratogenic for the developing fetus and can cause serious developmental disorders. They also pass into breast milk and are therefore contraindicated during breastfeeding as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Pregnant women should also not be prescribed antibiotics like tetracyclines, which are otherwise commonly used to treat acne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">This makes appropriate skincare especially important: using suitable creams and thoroughly cleansing the face to prevent makeup residues from clogging pores and contributing to breakouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">Taking any medication\u2014even herbal or homemade remedies\u2014should always be discussed with a gynecologist or dermatologist to avoid side effects such as unwanted pigmentation changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">If undergoing cosmetic treatments, the beautician should be informed of the pregnancy. Procedures like chemical peels or ultrasound facials should be postponed until after childbirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Acne during pregnancy \u2013 Boy or Girl?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">According to a widespread myth, skin problems and changes in hair and nails are signs of carrying a girl\u2014because \u201ca girl steals the mother\u2019s beauty.\u201d While there is no scientific basis for this belief, many people continue to hold onto it. Ultimately, it remains a superstition\u2014the baby&#8217;s gender should be determined via ultrasound by a gynecologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\" wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\"><strong>Other skin issues during pregnancy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">One very common skin issue during pregnancy is the so-called pregnancy mask (chloasma or melasma). These are pigment spots on the face, usually on the nose, cheeks, and forehead. Sun exposure can intensify this pigmentation, which typically begins around the 16th week of pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper wp-block-paragraph\">These discolorations are caused by increased melanin deposits. In addition to the face, they also occur around the nipples and anal area.
